Fluoroscopy

Real-Time Imaging for Precise Diagnosis and Treatment

At Pathway Imaging, we offer advanced fluoroscopy imaging to provide real-time, moving X-ray images of your body. This technology allows physicians to see organs, joints, and systems in motion, making it a valuable tool for both diagnosis and image-guided procedures.

What is Fluoroscopy?

Fluoroscopy uses a continuous X-ray beam and special imaging equipment to create a “live” video of the inside of your body. Unlike a traditional X-ray, which captures a single still image, fluoroscopy shows movement—helping doctors observe function, guide treatments, and perform minimally invasive procedures with accuracy.

Common Reasons for Fluoroscopy

  • Digestive system exams (such as swallowing studies, barium swallow, or upper GI series)
  • Joint evaluations (including arthrograms to assess cartilage, ligaments, and joint function)
  • Guided injections or biopsies for pain management or tissue sampling
  • Vascular studies to examine blood flow and detect blockages
  • Reproductive system exams (such as hysterosalpingograms for fertility evaluations)

What to Expect During Your Exam

  • Preparation: Instructions vary depending on the type of fluoroscopy exam. You may be asked to fast, avoid certain medications, or change into a gown.
  • During the Exam: You’ll be positioned on a table while a continuous X-ray captures live images. Sometimes contrast dye is used to highlight specific areas.
  • Time: Most exams take between 15–45 minutes.
  • After the Exam: Unless otherwise instructed, you can return to your normal activities. If contrast is used, staying hydrated helps flush it from your system. Results are interpreted by a board-certified radiologist and sent promptly to your physician.
