Preparing for Your Diagnostic Imaging Exam

General Preparation

  • Bring a valid photo ID and your insurance card.
  • Arrive at least 15–30 minutes early to complete any necessary paperwork.
  • Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing; you may be asked to change into a gown.
  • Remove metal objects such as jewelry, watches, eyeglasses, and hairpins, which may interfere with imaging.

Specific Exam Instructions

MRI / MRA / MRV

  • Inform staff of any metal implants, pacemakers, or surgical clips.
  • Remove all metal items, including piercings, hearing aids, and dentures.
  • Avoid wearing clothing with metallic fibers or zippers.
  • Some scans may require fasting or contrast dye; follow your provider’s instructions.

CT Scan / PET / PET-CT

  • You may need to fast for 2–6 hours before certain exams.
  • Drink plenty of water unless otherwise directed.
  • Notify staff of any allergies, especially to contrast dye or iodine.
  • Bring a list of current medications.

Ultrasound

  • Some exams require a full bladder (e.g., pelvic ultrasound) or fasting (e.g., abdominal ultrasound).
  • Follow any specific instructions provided by the imaging center.

DEXA / Bone Density

  • Avoid calcium supplements for 24 hours before the exam.
  • Wear clothing without metal zippers or buttons.

Mammography

  • Avoid deodorants, powders, or lotions on the day of your exam.
  • Wear a two-piece outfit for convenience.

Fluoroscopy / Interventional Radiology

  • Follow any fasting or medication instructions provided for your procedure.
  • Arrange transportation if sedation will be used.

General Tips

  • Bring any prior imaging studies if available for comparison.
  • Inform staff if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • Ask questions about what to expect during your exam—understanding the process can help ease anxiety.
