DEXA / Bone Density

Measure and Protect Your Bone Health

At Pathway Imaging, we offer advanced DEXA (Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry) scans to measure bone density and body composition. This simple, painless test is the gold standard for detecting osteoporosis, assessing fracture risk, and helping you take proactive steps to maintain strong, healthy bones.

What is a DEXA scan?

A DEXA scan is a specialized X-ray that measures bone mineral density. By comparing your results to normal values, doctors can determine whether your bones are healthy, thinning (osteopenia), or at risk for fractures (osteoporosis).

In addition to bone density, DEXA can also evaluate body composition, including fat and lean muscle distribution, which can be useful for weight management, fitness tracking, and overall health assessments.

Common Reasons for a DEXA Scan

  • Screening for osteoporosis, especially in women after menopause
  • Monitoring bone health in patients with fractures or chronic conditions
  • Tracking treatment effectiveness for osteoporosis or bone-strengthening therapies
  • Assessing bone health in men at risk for low bone density
  • Measuring body composition for health, weight loss, or athletic performance

What to Expect During Your Exam

  • Preparation: No special preparation is usually needed. You may be asked to avoid calcium supplements 24 hours before your scan.
  • During the Scan: You’ll lie comfortably on a padded table while a scanning arm passes over your body. The exam is quick, painless, and non-invasive.
  • Time: Most DEXA scans take 10–20 minutes.
  • After the Exam: You can resume normal activities immediately. Results are analyzed by a radiologist and shared with your physician.
